Skype Date Anyone?

I watch Little Vick’s face light up. He see’s a familiar face. He instantly wants to engage with them and he is lucky enough to be able to do that despite the two being some 8,500 km’s away from one another.
The world of Skype is a truly amazing one. I discovered it when I was on the road. It’s a travellers mate really and a saint for those left behind. It connects us.

I have always had international friends. They insist on leaving me behind. A few countries apart should never hinder a good friendship right? Thanks to Skype, I have been able to connect and talk face to face with them like all good girlfriends need to. Skype has become a normal part our modern, technologically savvy world that we live in.

My gaggle all together again…. besties connecting in

It’s not something I would have imagined when I was a child. When I was in primary school I remember we were fortunate enough to have 3 computers between us all (the entire school that is). It was a real privilege. I was always excited, if not a little nervous to be able to have my turn to type up my stories. Their functions were basic. We needed them for nothing more. They were amazing just as they were. No one had computers at home, not to mention individual lap tops of our own in the classroom. I was just happy to have my pen license. Certainly, the concept of being able to chat to someone thousands of kilometers away and to be able to see them on the screen was not something I would have ever been able to fathom and yet here we are some 20 years later and that’s exactly the world my child is growing up in.

I watch Little Vick talking to his Fairy God Mother in Seoul, a buddy in New York and to our Flemmish family in Belgium. He talks to a little boy in Kaprijke (Belgium). They giggle at each others play across the screen, they engage with one another through their little grunts and squeals. They share their own language. No different to if they were in person. I marvel. These two little boys will grow up together and have a friendship through a computer screen. To Little Vick, it is nothing extraordinary or privileged. It will just become his normal.

And I think to myself…. what a wonderful world, that we live in!
